The appearance at the Game Awards 2024 was really good for Helldivers 2. The online shooter can look forward to an enormous increase in the number of players on Steam.

Why was Helldivers 2 at the Game Awards? The developers have announced the biggest and probably most important update to date for the popular co-op shooter. In a new trailer, which you can find below, the Illuminated have been confirmed as the third enemy faction.

The Illuminated are a highly advanced alien civilization that will fight as an Over-Earth adversary against players in Helldivers 2, attacking in the lower part of the galaxy map. The fight against the Illuminated should be fundamentally different from the battles against the beetles and robots, as you fight in the cities of the various colonies.

What is the impact of the announcement? Well, obviously the trailer and the announcement have fueled the desire of many fans to log into the co-op shooter again. Shortly after the Game Awards, the number of simultaneously active players rose to over 72,000 (via Reddit). At the weekend the statistics even climbed to 150,169 active players at the same time (via steamdb.info).

For comparison: In the days before the event, fewer than 25,000 players were online at the same time. Comparably high numbers were last seen in April 2024, just under two months after launch. The all-time high remains at 458,709 simultaneously active players.

How is the community reacting to the new high?

  • Hangulman was there live (via Reddit): “It took all my self-control to log off for the night. I played an Illuminate flag raising mission. When the mission began, there were less than 30k people online. By the time I finished the mission it was over 100k and counting.”
  • darkyaegavor gives the simple reason for the increase on Reddit: “Democracy is calling.” RandomRon005 adds on Reddit: “The Helldivers are answering.”
  • The Reddit post by Eliminator12727, which shows 156,069 active Helldivers, shows that the increase in players also occurred on PS5.
