“Don’t know what planet the government lives on”

The flight tax will be abolished on 1 July 2025, the government and the Sweden Democrats announced on Tuesday.
Now the opposition and environmental organizations are falling apart.
– I don’t know what planet the government lives on. Abolished flight tax increases emissions and does not contribute one bit to guaranteeing Swedish growth, says Ida Gabrielsson, vice-chairman of the Left Party.

The abolition is to promote air traffic in Sweden and improve accessibility throughout the country, announced Sweden Democrats group leader Linda Lindberg.

– Ticket prices will simply be reduced, she says.

But the announcement has already provoked strong reactions among the political opposition and environmental organizations.

– I was pissed off and frustrated. But given how this government has acted so far, I’m unfortunately not surprised, says David Kihlberg, climate manager at the Nature Conservation Association.

– At the same time, based on the alarm reports we have from the climate scientists, the international agreements, the laws that Sweden has been involved in deciding on at the EU level, it is still shocking that they continue to dismantle climate policy even more and increase Sweden’s emissions, he continues.

“Worrying”

The Left Party’s Ida Gabrielsson also strongly criticizes the abolition in a message to TV4.

“I don’t know what planet the government lives on. Abolished flight tax increases emissions and does not contribute one bit to guaranteeing Swedish growth”.

“Today’s announcement is worrying, instead of investments in our growth areas in the north, the government is hoping for a fly-in, fly-out system. It is not good for Sweden, the emissions and the Swedish economy, she continues.
