When looking for a suitable beverage to accompany food, many people’s first choice is acidic beverages. Acidic beverages, which are found in almost every home, are frequently consumed. But drinking soda may increase the risk of premature death for millions of people, according to a study. Harvard University researchers found that adults with type 2 diabetes were more likely to die from heart disease if they drank more than one can a day.

Replacing health-impairing sodas with hot drinks can extend your years, researchers say. Dr. “Overall, these results provide additional evidence that highlights the importance of beverage choices in maintaining overall health among adults with diabetes,” said Le Ma. It is caused by problems with a chemical in the body called insulin, which breaks down sugars in the blood. The condition causes blood sugar levels to rise too high and can lead to heart disease and stroke over time.
TEA AND COFFEE CAN REDUCE THE RISK OF HEART DISEASE
Previous studies have linked drinking about two or three cups of tea or coffee a day to a lower risk of heart disease by reducing swelling. Recent research, published in the BMJ, looked at how drinking different beverages affects patients’ lifespans.
SODA DRINKS ARE MORE RISK OF DEATH
Researchers tracked how regularly more than 15,000 U.S. adults with the condition drank tea, coffee, sweetened sodas, unsweetened soda, fruit juice, milk, and water. After an average of 18 and a half years, about 3,447 developed heart disease, and 7,638 people died in total. Patients who drank more than one soda per day were one-fifth more likely to die than those who drank less than once a month. In contrast, patients who drank more coffee, tea, plain water or low-fat milk were less likely to die prematurely.
REPLACING SODAS WITH COFFEE REDUCED THE RISK OF DEATH
Drinking up to six cups a day reduced the risk of death by more than a quarter for coffee lovers and a fifth for tea drinkers. Those who increased the amount of coffee they drank after being diagnosed with diabetes had an 18 percent lower risk of early death than those who did not. Replacing sodas with coffee reduced the risk of death by 18 percent and for tea by 16 percent.
