Gum bleeding is one of the most common dental problems in society. Many people do not go to the doctor, thinking that painless gum bleeding does not cause a big problem. However, bleeding gums can be a sign of risky diseases. It is known that high blood sugar causes bleeding gums.
Some of the warning signs of high blood sugar are bleeding gums, increased risk of amputation and eye disease. As for gum disease, Diabetes UK says people with diabetes are at risk of developing dental problems such as periodontal disease.
MAY CAUSE ODOR
The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) defines bleeding gums as a symptom of gum disease, which can include “swollen, red and painful” gums. Gum disease can also cause bad breath, a bad taste in the mouth, or loose teeth.
CAN CAUSE TOOTH LOSS
Diabetes UK explains that gum disease is caused by a group of bacteria in plaque known as gingivitis, which is caused by toxins inflaming the gums. This can cause bone loss around the tooth and gum recession over time. This can then lead to tooth loss, known as periodontitis.

“It’s never normal for your gums to bleed when you brush your teeth and you should see a dentist,” said Diabetes UK. If a person is able to control their gum disease, their chances of improving their blood sugar control management will increase. Bleeding gums are not the only symptom when you have type 2 diabetes, but it can have more serious consequences.
MUCH RISK OF LIMB amputation
The NHS reports that people with diabetes are 15 times more likely to have an amputation than other people without the condition. According to Diabetes UK, non-healing ulcers and foot infections are the leading causes of diabetes-related amputations. “Diabetic foot ulcers precede more than 80 percent of amputations”
IT CAN CAUSE Blindness IF NOT TREATED
Another complication of type 2 diabetes is diabetic retinopathy, known as an eye disease. If left undiagnosed and untreated, this condition can lead to blindness several years later. Therefore, diabetics need to control their health. In this way, worsening of the situation can be prevented.
HEALTH PROBLEMS CAUSED BY HIGH BLOOD SUGAR
Uncontrolled blood sugar levels can have a variety of consequences, not just gum disease, amputation and eye disease. The NHS says type 2 diabetes can lead to other conditions such as:
- heart disease and stroke
- Loss of ability to feel pain (nerve damage)
- Foot problems such as sores and infections
- Vision loss and blindness
- Miscarriage and stillbirth
- Problems with the kidneys
- Sexual problems, such as difficulty getting or maintaining an erection.
