The new owner will be a consortium of American investors, led by baseball club Los Angeles Dodgers co-owner Todd Boehly, after a bid of the equivalent of around SEK 52 billion.
The owner 19 years ago, the Russian Roman Abramovich, put the club up for sale in March, shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. A few days later, Britain imposed sanctions on several oligarchs, including Abramovich, with close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, making it difficult to sell.
Earlier this week, however, it became clear that the British government was approving the deal, as it was ensured that Abramovich would not make any money from the sale.
