It has been estimated that Germany fears the expansion of the conflict between Russia and NATO if battle tanks are sent to Ukraine.
Head of the Russia group at the National Defense University, lieutenant colonel Simo Pesu estimates that donating battle tanks to Ukraine as a single act would not push the countries donating the tanks to become a party to the war.
It has been estimated that Germany fears the expansion of the conflict between Russia and NATO if battle tanks are sent from Western countries to Ukraine.
– A single weapon, whether there are a hundred or two hundred of them, will not solve this war. But it provides the conditions as part of the whole for Ukraine to achieve the goal, said Pesu in an interview with morning on Friday.
According to Pesu, the desire of Western countries to send more powerful weapons to Ukraine is hindered especially by Russia’s status as a nuclear weapon state.
– Nuclear deterrence has worked as intended over the past year, i.e. it has restrained the aid given to Ukraine. Nuclear deterrence also prevents another great power from pushing its armed forces into Ukraine.
Even in Finland, there has been talk of donating Leopard 2 battle tanks to Ukraine. Pesu emphasizes that it is up to the defense forces to assess whether the wagons can be donated to Ukraine. In Pesu’s opinion, Finland could ideally offer tank-related know-how and training, as many other experts have assessed recently.
The United States confirmed on Friday that it will deliver a massive new arms aid package to Ukraine, worth about 2.5 billion dollars, or about 2.3 billion euros. However, the package does not include long-range weapons.
According to Pesu, however, Ukraine still needs long-range weapons. He reminds that the HIMARS missile launcher systems that the United States previously donated to Ukraine practically changed the battles in Ukraine’s favor in the summer.
