Donald Trump finally rear back machine on Thursday, March 6, in his commercial offensive against Mexico. He announced on his social social network that most of the customs duties against his neighbor would be suspended until April 2.
“Mexico will not have to pay customs duties on all the goods covered by the ACEUM”, the free trade treaty which regulates most of the trade between the two countries, which represents most of the products exchanged between neighboring countries. “This agreement goes until April 2,” promised the American president, who indicates that he had made this decision “in terms of” for his counterpart Claudia Sheinbaum, with which he has a “very good” relationship, after having maintained himself on the phone with her.
Relief from the Mexican presidency
Mexico’s relieved reaction was not long in coming. Its president welcomed the decision of her American counterpart in the process, by renting collaboration with “unprecedented results”. Since Tuesday, the United States has required 25 % customs duties on Canadian and Mexican products. While Canada had immediately retaliated, the Mexican president had delayed, and proposed to wait until the weekend before announcing possible countermeasures.
The two governments will now continue to work together, “particularly on the subjects of migration and security, which include a reduction in the illegal passage from fentanyl to the United States, as well as that of weapons to Mexico,” the Mexican president said in a press release.
