Where?
Butler, Pennsylvania in the United States. At a campaign rally, just days before Donald Trump is expected to be officially chosen as the Republican presidential candidate for the US election in November, a shooting occurred. It was the last campaign meeting before the Republican convention, which begins on Monday.
When?
Saturday afternoon, local time. Donald Trump was on stage and had spoken for a short time when shots suddenly rang out.
Was anyone hurt?
Two people are dead after the shooting, Butler County District Attorney Richard Goldinger said. One of them is the shooter, the other a spectator sitting in the audience.
Two more people who were in the audience are seriously injured, the security service Secret Service says.
In pictures, Donald Trump appears to be bleeding from the ear as he is taken to safety by bodyguards from the scene. Trump himself writes on his platform Truth Social that the upper part of his right ear was hit by a bullet. He walked, with support, down from the stage. Donald Trump’s associates state that the former president is doing well and receiving treatment.
What do we know about the shooter?
Police sources tell several media that the shooter was killed by the security service, but this has not been confirmed. The Secret Service says the shooter was neutralized.
District Attorney Richard Goldinger states that the shooter was not inside the meeting but on the roof of a nearby building, which means that the person did not go through the security check that all participants in the campaign meeting went through.
No details are known about who the shooter was, or whether it was a man or woman.
What do we know about the subject?
Anonymous police sources tell AP and CNN, among others, that the shooting is being investigated as an assassination attempt on Donald Trump.
US President Joe Biden later said he had “an opinion” on whether or not it should be considered an assassination attempt – but that he didn’t have enough facts to make an opinion on the matter.
How does it affect the convention?
The Republican Party Convention, when Donald Trump is officially expected to be nominated as the party’s presidential candidate, will still be held as planned, according to a statement from the party. The convention begins on Monday in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Trump says he looks forward to attending the convention.
