Donald Trump opens for a third term on the presidential post.

And there are “several methods” to extend the time in power, he says.

– In other words, he is going to do a Putin? says USA expert Dag Blanck.

In an interview with NBC News Trump was asked if he could think of sitting for another term and replied:

“Many people want me to do it,” he said, clarifying that “he doesn’t joke”.

When asked if there are plans to apply for a third term of office, Trump replied that “there are methods to do so”.

NBC then painted a possible scenario where Vice President JD Vance would candidate and hand over power to Trump.

– It’s a method. But there are others too, Trump replied.

Frida Stranne, a doctor of peace and development research focusing on American foreign and security policy, is not surprised.

– There has been something that has been discussed in the circles around him for a few months. We have heard some people talk about reviewing the possibilities. Then it is about the fact that there is a rule that a president must not sit more than two terms of office. But then you want to test whether it is only where it is a coherent period or if it can be different if you have had a break in between. As has happened now. And then you want to test the constitution in that way by trying opportunities if it goes. So that’s probably what he is referring to, I would think. And it’s not surprising.

Can you do so?

– So, the American constitution is very difficult. All presidents try different ways of strengthening their power. But that is a struggle between the president and the judicial system. It is not possible to say whether it is possible or not to do so. These are new things that need to be tested.

What reactions arouses, do you think?

– Yes, it arouses among those who support him for an opportunity to extend his presidency. And it will arouse a lot of reactions to abuse of power and the kind of discussion among opponents and among many who perceive authoritarian tendencies in his presidency. It will be as shared as in all other issues, she says.

Dag Blanck, professor of North American Studies at Uppsala University, does not believe that Trump’s hopes will be met.

And he is asking for using JD Vance to hand over power.

– In other words, he is going to do a Putin? That’s how Putin did. No, I think it is extremely unlikely that the Supreme Court would approve it. And why would Vance agree on it?

Getting a constitutional change would also be difficult, Blanck believes.

– The 22nd addition in the constitution says that you can only choose your president twice. He has now. The only thing you can do is change the constitution. And it is a very complicated process. This requires that two -thirds of Congress approve such a bill.
It is extremely unlikely to happen. There is a small Republican majority, but not two -thirds. In addition, it is required that three -quarters of the states also approve it. And it will not happen.

It sounds like you are pushing this down?

– I think it’s very unlikely. I think the best way would be to change the constitution. But this thing about letting a friend choose … That has happened in and of itself, among governors, that real spouses have been chosen. But I do not think it has occurred that anyone has resigned in favor of anyone else.
