Donald Trump knows it: going to Ireland is good for his image with the 35 million Americans of Irish descent. What is a little less is the context: it is his first trip abroad since he was prosecuted on 34 counts earlier this month. The former White House tenant could be the first US president to serve time in prison. He is notably accused of rape and fraudulent business practices.
Just a few weeks after the President Joe Biden’s walkaboutthe arrival of Donald Trump therefore does not provoke the same enthusiasm on the island, although it is renowned for its sense of hospitality.
Irish people divided
For many Irish people, the Trump presidency has tainted the precious relationship between the United States and Ireland and the idea that he could run for election in 2024 is not unanimous.
On paper, it’s not an official trip, but the campaign is still on his mind, he told reporters waiting for him at the airport. Victory for his side would make America greater than ever, he said.
