Another indictment has been brought against former US President Donald Trump.
This time, the indictment concerns his attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
– The attack on our nation’s capital on January 6 was an unprecedented attack on American democracy, says prosecutor Jack Smith.
Donald Trump is indicted on four counts.
The indictment charges Trump with conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, attempting to obstruct an official proceeding and conspiracy against rights.
“Despite losing, the defendant was determined to remain in power. For more than two months after election day on November 3, 2020, the defendant spread lies that there had been decisive fraud in the election and that he actually won. These statements were false, and the defendant knew they were false,” the indictment states.
Prosecutor Jack Smith says the storming of the Capitol was carried out by Trump supporters driven by his lies.
Six suspected co-conspirators
The indictment names six co-conspirators who had central roles in trying to keep Trump in power. In the indictment, they were unnamed, as they are not themselves suspected of crimes. According to The Guardian matched five of the descriptions to Trump’s advocates Rudy Giulani, Sidney Powell, John Eastman, Ken Chesebro and Jeff Clark. The last one is not identified.
Third charge
This is the third time in a short time that Trump has been indicted. In March, he was charged with multiple accounting violations when porn star Stormy Daniels received $130,000 for her silence about their alleged affair. In June, he was charged with handling classified documents. Trump denies wrongdoing in both cases.
According to CNN, Trump will appear in court on Thursday.
– We will try to get a quick trial, says Smith.
