The US Supreme Court hears the appeal of declaring Trump

Trump lost the lawsuit he brought against the magazine last spring.

Former President of the United States Donald Trump was ordered on Friday to pay the legal costs of the New York Times magazine and several of its journalists almost 400,000 dollars, or about 365,000 euros.

Trump had sued the magazine and three of its editors over the Pulitzer Prize-winning report published in 2018, which dealt with the former president’s financial information. The newspaper’s investigation revealed how Trump had received from his father over the years a sum equivalent to approximately $413 million in today’s money, which had been transferred through a fictitious company to avoid taxation.

The New York State Supreme Court dismissed Trump’s lawsuit in May of last year and ordered him to pay the opposing party’s legal fees.

Friday’s ruling ruled that the New York Times’ estimate of more than $392,000 in legal fees seemed reasonable and ordered Trump to pay them in full.

– The court has sent a message to those who want to abuse the legal system to try to silence journalists, the newspaper’s spokesperson Danielle Rhoads Ha said after the decision.
