Donald Trump will be charged in a New York court. His formal surrender to the judiciary follows negotiations between his lawyers, the judiciary and security authorities in the United States.
The charges against the former president remain classified and will not be announced until the initial court hearing.
Trump’s closest legal advisers were surprised by the announcement, and his lawyer Joe Tacopina wants to play down the charges and at the same time politicize the legal process.
The time for the opening court hearing is 2:15 p.m. local time, 8:15 p.m. Swedish time.
The investigation is about Trump being suspected of having paid the former porn actor before the 2016 election campaign Stephanie Clifford, also known as Stormy Daniels, $130,000 not to disclose that she and Trump had an affair. The payment itself is not illegal, but prosecutors are believed to be targeting the accounting of the payment.
In addition, Trump could be charged with violating US campaign finance laws, which is a more serious crime under US law.
