For SessionLab, Hortense Volle met Montreal artist of Haitian descent Dominique Fils-Aimé. Portrait of a free 37-year-old woman who, not content to have all the talents, has a speech as poetic as it is militant. Listen to headphones (3D audio).
Author, composer, performer, Dominique Fils-Aimé is self-taught and damn gifted: she has the charisma of Nina Simone, the verve of Billie Holiday and the timbre of Etta James. Just that !
One of the most singular voices of the Belle Province (Quebec), has three albums to her credit. A trilogy in fact, inspired by the legacies of African-American music. Each shutter was designed around a color and a style specific to the time evoked.
Nameless (2017) the record where blues and jazz are highlighted, is blue like the night and the ocean that the slaves crossed from Africa. Stay Tuned! (2018) is red with passion and revolt, while his songs are inspired by American jazz from the 1960s. Finally, the yellow of Three little words (2020) symbolizes the liberating and unifying aspect of soul.
A charisma, a technique, a groove, an impressive vocal palette, a speech as poetic as it is militant, Dominique has it all!
In the fall of 2021, I therefore took advantage of her European tour to meet her in Paris. She met me there at the Canadian Cultural Center, a space that for half a century has been dedicated to promoting contemporary Canadian creation, across all artistic sectors.
Results ? His maturity and his humanity left me speechless. Listen to see!
