According to the French Federation for the Prevention of Domestic Risks : “11 million French people are injured each year due to domestic accident“. The National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) completes these statistics “more than 20,000 deaths are due to everyday accidents, including domestic accidents”. Figures that reveal the dangerous nature of our daily lives!
In question ? Household appliances are at the heart of accidents. The Fastcompany website mentions an American study carried out by the LendingTree platform, which analyzed and listed the devices most involved in everyday accidents. For this study, the platform was based on accidents that took place in the United States between 2013 and 2022.
So which devices should you be wary of? Discover the ranking of the most dangerous!
Which device is at the top of the ranking?
In first place among the most dangerous devices, we find the refrigerator. In fact, it is responsible for around a quarter of domestic accidents between 2013 and 2022. In most cases, the accident is linked to a water leak which leads to a fall…then to tragedy.
In second place come the ovens. They represent approximately one accident in five, which corresponds to 325,737 injuries in nine years.
Following the classification, we find in order from most to least dangerous: vacuum cleaners, washing machines, microwave ovens, dishwashers, then tumble dryers, independent freezers, irons ironing board, and finally mini electric ovens.
A device that we do not trust
This ranking surprises you? If children are generally taught to be wary of hot sources such as the oven or iron, prevention on the refrigerator is rarer. Why is it dangerous then? First of all because it is one of the most used on a daily basis, by all members of the family. And honestly, few people are wary of it!
The LendingTree platform also adds that the most affected are children aged 0 to 4 years old. They concern 9.8% of accident cases. The 50-54 and 55-59 age groups are also often victims of domestic accidents. They each represent 6.5%.
Therefore, it is important to warn families of the dangers associated with household appliances. As we see with the refrigerator, no device should be neglected at the risk of it being the most dangerous.
