– Flames were shooting out through the windows and the roof when we arrived at the scene, so the fire was a long way off, says Magnus Skyttemo, officer on duty at the Safety and Security Center in Kalmar.
The villa stood on a water protection area, which limited the rescue service’s ability to use water, so as not to cause environmental damage or problems with drinking water supply.
– We have protected nearby buildings and had to let the villa burn down, says Magnus Skyttemo.
Monitors large glow pile
On Sunday morning, the emergency services were still on the scene to monitor the large pile of embers.
– It still flares up a bit, so we preserve it during the day until we judge it safe to leave.
The police are investigating arson
It is unclear what caused the fire. The police have cordoned off the scene and filed a report of arson. They have not been able to start the preliminary investigation because it is too hot.
