Crossing guard says some drivers aren’t paying attention

SIMCOE Police are reminding drivers to use caution in school zones after a dog was injured this week by a vehicle near a Simcoe school.

Ontario Provincial Police Acting Sgt. Ed Sanchuk said the dog was injured on Donly Drive South in the area of Lynndale Heights elementary school at about 8:30 am on June 13.

Sanchuk said a small blue car ran over the dog’s paw, before driving away.

The dog is recovering at home after undergoing surgery, he said.

“We want to speak to any witnesses and to that driver that ran over that dog,,,,” Sanchuk said on social media.

He said police want to get the driver’s version of the incident.

“And, we want to talk to you about leaving the scene of this crash, as well.”

Kim Feere, who has been a school crossing guard for 23 years and is stationed outside Lynndale Heights school, has a message for drivers.

“Please slow down,” she said on social media.

“You are just going way too fast. People are still on their phones, doing rolling stops, not even stopping.

“Why can’t they see me with an orange vest on? I don’t get it.”

Feere said she sees drivers using their phones, packing lunches, eating, drinking and more. “Even once I saw them scratching lottery tickets; like you can’t wait a few seconds.”

Feere and Sanchuk stressed the importance of safety in school zones.

“I want these kids to get to school safe, and home safe – and myself,” Feere said.

Drivers should anticipate delays in school zones, Sanchuk added.

“You need to make sure you pack an ample supply of patience,” he said.
