The German series Die Therapie has been available on Amazon Prime since Thursday. The six-part thriller is based on the novel of the same name by Sebastian Fitzek, whose action takes place on a German island called Parkum. The main character, the psychiatrist Viktor Larenz, retreats into the wasteland. But is Parkum real or fictional?
Does Parkum really exist?
No, Parkum is not a real island. So you don’t have to replan your next North Sea vacation. Sebastian Fitzek invented the small island for his novel The Therapy. The series adopted the setting and the name for its plot. Lots of wind, frosty beaches and hardly any people: Parkum’s appearance is similar to smaller North Sea islands such as Spiekeroog, Amrum and Föhr. And that is no coincidence.
What is the filming location of The Therapy instead?
According to Amazon, the therapy was based on the North Sea islands Amrum and Föhr turned. Both islands together form the fictional Parkum. Incidentally, the weather during production was not as bad as depicted in the series: fog, storms and rain were artificially created to fuel the spooky atmosphere.
What is therapy about?
Viktor Larenz (Stephan Kampwirth) works as a psychiatrist in Berlin. Two years ago, his 13-year-old daughter Josy (Helena Zengel) disappeared without a trace: no witnesses, no body and no clues to her whereabouts. The confused father retreats to his remote holiday home in the North Sea. An unknown woman named Anna Spiegel (Emma Bading) visits him there. The writer suffers from schizophrenia and wants to be treated by Larenz. And she seems to know a little too much about Larenz’s missing daughter.
