A doctor who works at Region Sörmland is sentenced to three years in prison for rape, reports Eskilstuna-Kuriren.
He has been in custody since October after the crime was committed in June and is still being paid during the period – pending a decision on his medical credentials and future employment.
On June 26, the rape took place while the man was working as a doctor at the hospital. It was not until October 18 that he was taken into custody.
Now the man is sentenced by the Örebro district court to three years in prison and damages of SEK 215,000 to the victimized woman. During the trial, the man has denied any crime, but the prosecutor’s evidence is deemed to be convincing enough that the doctor could still be convicted.
Among other things, the man is said to have made almost 100 calls to the woman after the incident – for which he has no explanation. The woman must have explicitly told him to stop calling.
Receives salary until a decision on medical identification is made
Since the man was detained, Region Sörmland decided that he would be exempt from work with pay for an indefinite period.
– I don’t know exactly what work has been going on in the time since the arrest, but even though it has probably been thought about in one direction and the other, the verdict came today. Then we have to act based on it, and HR and others with expert knowledge must look at that now, says Fredrik Gustavsson, press officer in Region Sörmland, to Eskilstuna-Kuriren on Friday.
The Inspectorate for Care and Care (Ivo) will investigate the man’s suitability as a doctor after the verdict. They then have a prosecutorial role when the case is handed over to the Health Care Accountability Board (HSAN), which functions as a court. HSAN can primarily decide on the revocation of identification, a probationary period and the withdrawal or limitation of the right to prescribe, i.e. the right to prescribe medicines.
