It has been known since 2020 that Riot Games, the makers of League of Legends and Valorant, are working on an MMORPG in the LoL universe. But do you still remember the strange announcement? That was all planned, says the boss now.
What kind of game is this? Nobody knows that exactly, and actually not inaccurately either. Because almost no information is known about the MMORPG in the LoL universe. Not even the name is certain.
It is also still unclear whether the MMORPG is Project F, which was announced in 2019, or whether Project F is something completely different again. Riot announced the various projects for the 10th anniversary of League, which has also resulted in Valorant from Project A.
Already at the 2019 presentation there was only a 40-second clip for Project F to see. But that could just as well be an adventure game from the iso perspective and not the MMORPG.
How was this announced? But whether we’re talking about Project F or any other game that’s going to be the MMORPG, the announcement was strange. Because only since a tweet by former LoL games designer Greg Street in 2020 has it been known that it will be an MMORPG.
On December 18, 2020, he announced on Twitter that he would expand the League universe with a “massive” new game that many fans want. At the same time, he said that Riot will also hire new people in the process.
A lot of fans asked and just minutes later he added: Yes, it’s an MMO. It was only when the website PCGamer asked Riot Games directly that the company confirmed that they were actually working on an MMORPG.
Another game announced in 2019 is Fighter Project L, for which there is much more information:
“The big answers come when we have more confidence”
Riot wanted it exactly like this: Now the head of the MMORPG confirms on Twitter that this strange situation was intentional and that it was the CEO’s decision to announce the game in this way.
He also says that they decided to launch it so early because you work with so many people on such a big project that it would have been leaked somewhere in the end anyway. In addition, an early announcement is also good for finding suitable personnel.
Because that’s what you need, according to Chef Greg Street. He says: “Everyone at least kind of knows how to make an MMORPG. But you need real veterans to actually implement it. In addition, massive costs and a lot of time.”
You can read the thread for yourself here:
Why is there little information? Greg Street also explains this in his thread. He writes that it takes more self-confidence to show people more of the LoL MMORPG. But Greg assures that they are on the right track and that everything is going as it should.
He also describes that one should go public neither too early nor too late. The team doesn’t want to offer an “E3 experience” and show an almost finished game. Much more, Riot would like you to be able to make a U-turn after “showing” the content and react to the feedback.
You don’t want to have to save a game with a rocky start, rather the MMORPG will continue to be postponed, Street continues. At the end I want people to say, “Yeah, it was worth the wait, that’s what I wanted.”
What do you think of the LoL MMORPG? Are you interested in the game and is it relevant to you so far? Or still too far away? Do you think Project F will be its own game or is it the MMO? Feel free to write it to us in the comments, here at MeinMMO.
