Do you no longer dare to open your trash can because of the rotten smell it gives off? A few very simple tips will help you eliminate this stench, especially when it is very hot.

Whether they are placed inside, most often in the kitchen, or outside our homes, our trash cans are essentially intended to collect our waste. And in particular our food waste: peelings, bones, carcasses, leftovers, etc. However, all these organic elements decompose naturally by fermenting. And unless you compost in a suitable container, this decomposition inevitably generates very unpleasant odors, especially in summer, as the heat accelerates and accentuates this phenomenon. Result: our trash cans turn into nauseating factories that are increasingly difficult to open.

Luckily, there are a few simple ways to keep your trash cans fresh and eliminate those unbearable odors. First and foremost, you need to choose your trash bags wisely. This tip may seem obvious, but it’s crucial to use bags that are strong enough, especially for organic waste. Bags that tear or leak are often the culprits for bad smells. If your bags seem a little flimsy, use the “safety bag” technique by lining the inside of the trash can with an extra bag, ready to catch any accidental leaks.

The first tip to avoid bad smells is to simply use baking soda, this miracle product that never ceases to amaze us. Sprinkle a small layer at the bottom of your trash can, and it will work wonders by absorbing moisture and neutralizing odors. For greater effectiveness, you can even add a little on your waste before closing the bag. You will see, it is a simple gesture that can greatly improve the situation.

But other natural products are even more effective: essential oils. Yes, a few drops of these little wonders can make all the difference. You can use them in different ways. For example, by adding a few drops to the baking soda that you place at the bottom of the trash can. Or, by soaking a used fabric softener sheet in essential oil before placing it at the bottom of the bin. But that’s not all: you can also apply these oils to a small self-adhesive felt that you can attach under the lid of the trash can. Result? Every time you open your trash can, a pleasant smell will diffuse into the air.

You’re probably smiling at the thought of a trash can scented with notes of lavender, lemon or eucalyptus. But don’t stop there! Combining several tips, such as baking soda, essential oils and regular cleaning with vinegar or hydrogen peroxide, will ensure that your trash can is always clean and odor-free.
