Do you like the Apple Mail Apple installed on your iPhone or iPad? From iOS 14, you can replace it very easily with the messaging of your choice.
You have probably noticed it, it is email, the Apple email management application, installed and configured by default, which launches systematically when you type on an e-mail address on your iPhone or iPad.
Until iOS 13, it was of course possible to install another email application in parallel with that of Apple. But it was however impossible to make it automatically starts every time. There was always a time when email remembered our (good?) Souvenir, which therefore forced to configure at least one messaging account in the Apple app to be able to send a message, without having to leave it to launch the one we wanted to use in place.
Everything changes with iOS 14, because it is now possible to choose the email management application that launches automatically to write a new message. An option awaited for a long time and very practical to take advantage of advanced functions without obstacle which are lacking in the apple application, such as the postponement, the sleeping of certain messages to respond later or collaboration with several on the same account. As on PC or Mac, it is therefore now possible to choose its email application and forget that delivered as standard with the iPhone or iPad.
Note that all the e -mail management applications available on the App Store are not necessarily compatible with this new function of the iOS 14 system. First of all, its developer has made an update and that Apple validated it, which can take a little time. We can regret the tight control of Apple, but it is a question of security in order to prevent a “real/false” e-mail application attempts to seize your data!
Let’s start by indicating that at the time of writing these lines, the Gmail app has not yet been updated to allow it to become the default email management application. But it will necessarily come, and we already know how it will happen. This is why we mention it here.
The application dedicated to Google’s messaging has existed for several years on iPhone. For a long time she was only able to connect to her Gmail account (s). But recently, it has become universal and also manages the Microsoft (Outlook.com) accounts, Yahoo, iCloud and any account at Standard IMAP. This makes it a perfect candidate for replacing the iPhone email application. Especially since only the Gmail application will notify you of the arrival of new Gmail messages. Apple’s application is not capable of it.
- If you have not yet installed the Gmail application on your iPhone, go to the App Store to search and download it.
- Tap the button Get Or the cloud with an arrow pointing down if you have already installed Gmail at least once.
- Then go to the Settings of your device and scroll through the screen to the line Gmail.
- Type on Gmail then, in the next screen, on the new iOS 14 function called Default email app.
- Choose Gmail in the next screen. That’s it.
- Google’s electronic mail management application will now be used by default for all your emails. Provided of course you have added your accounts to it. Because Gmail will not recover those which are already configured on your iPhone or iPad.
It’s not just Gmail in life! And maybe you don’t use any Google’s services. No problem, there are many other electronic mail management applications, offering at least another interface that you will find more pleasant, and often functions that you lack in mail. Let us quote, for example, the excellent Outlook of Microsoft or Spark of Readdle, which are also available on computer (PC and Mac for the first and Mac only for the second). This allows you to find a coherent environment regardless of the machine used to consult and send your emails.
If your favorite application does not offer this option again, take your pain in patience and regularly check its updates: it is a safe bet that the developers will not let an opportunity to replace one of the Apple tools!
Whatever the messaging application you want to activate by default, the procedure is the same: install the application and go to the settings to indicate your choice to the iPhone.
- Go to the App Store, look for the desired application, then touch the button Get to install it.
- Once the new electronic messaging application is installed, go to the Settings of your iPhone of your iPad.
- Scroll down the list then type on the name of the application.
- Select the application that interests and type on Default emails app.
- The following screen displays the list of all compatible and installed email apps. Check that your app is selected. It’s done.
