They could take out a loan for a driver’s license

The driver’s license loan was aimed at those who wanted to get a driver’s license for cars and light trucks. What is officially called driving license qualification B.

The loan would according to CSN website cover costs such as course materials, driving lessons and mandatory training sessions. The loan could also cover costs for driving and knowledge tests as well as renting a vehicle at the traffic school or the Swedish Transport Administration.

The driver’s license loan is paid out in three stages, based on how much costs you incurred to get your driver’s license.

The interest rate is raised sharply

In 2024, the interest rate for a driver’s license loan from CSN was 2.64 percent, but in 2025 it will be raised sharply.

From the turn of the year, the interest rate is instead at 3.73 percent, which is an increase of over one percentage point.

The possibility to apply for a driver’s license loan was removed by CSN in January 2024, but an approved decision on a driver’s license loan is valid for one year. It is also possible to have your decision extended for up to two years.

Although the increase in the interest rate is large in percentage terms, it is relatively modest in kroner and öre.

The increase of 1.09 percentage points means that the annual interest cost on a loan of SEK 15,000 increases by SEK 163.5, from SEK 396 to SEK 559.5.
