The world’s largest furniture company is Swedish Ikea. The company was founded by Ingvar Kamprad 1943, and was then a mail order company.
Furniture first began to be sold in 1948 and in 1955 the company began designing its own furniture and selling it. Over time, the furniture giant has grown into one of the world’s largest companies, and in 2023 it had a turnover of 19.2 billion kroner – just in Sweden. Globally, the corresponding figure was a breathtaking SEK 546.7 billion.
Over the years, several classic pieces of furniture have been produced and sold to the public. And when the items have been taken out of the range, some of them have become real rarities over time. Armchairs such as “Cavelli” and “Impala” are some of them. The first one was sold a couple of years ago for SEK 190,000 at the City Auction in Sundsvall.

The classics, which over time have become real cash cows on the second-hand market, have resulted in the fact that there is now a plethora of products that collectors and interior designers are happy to get their hands on.
One of them is the now classic sofa “Moment” from 1985.
If you were to sit on one of these, it might be worth applying to an international auction house. It has been auctioned for anything between SEK 17,000-62,000 depending on its condition, according to Viivilla.
At the Swedish auction trade Bukowski’s the sofa has been sold for anything from SEK 3,000 up to SEK 7,000. In other words, it might be worth looking for international buyers if you were to have the sofa in your possession.
“Moment” was designed by Niels Gammelgard and has a straight construction with an undercarriage and back part made of steel.
When it was launched and named “Moment”, it was the world’s first sofa that was packaged in flat packages by Ikea.
