In 2016 and 2017, a number of different Swedish banknotes became invalid in shops in Sweden. 20-krona notes, 50-krona notes and 1000-krona notes all became invalid on 30 June 2016. On the same date the following year, 100-notes and 500-apps followed the same fate.
These can still be valuable, even though they were so recently invalidated in Swedish stores. In Facebook groups and on Tradera, old cash is sold for more – and less – than its original value.

The expert: How do you know if your old cash is worth more now
News24 have talked to Thomas Larssoncoin, banknote and collectors expert at Tradera about what makes the old banknotes valuable.
– Like most things in the collector category, it is the availability and quality that are directly decisive for the value. Something that is rare and of high quality usually stands out in price, he says.

At Tradera, private individuals sell coins and banknotes in all imaginable year editions and conditions.
– If you take a 100 note that was sold for more than 100 kroner, it may be because it is in good condition, if you take a crumpled 100 note, you only get a fraction of the original value, says Larsson and continues:
– The reason why these even have a value is because there are some who want them in worse condition.

Redeem at the Riksbank or sell yourself?
Anyone who can’t bear to start ads on buying and selling sites can redeem their old banknotes at The Riksbankbut then a fee of SEK 200 is added. In addition, the Riksbank needs to know where the banknotes come from.
– The notes that became invalid in 2016 and 2017 can still be exchanged at the Riksbank, but then you must be able to report where they come from, for example if they have been hidden or came in connection with an inheritance or the like, says Larsson.

Some notes are naturally not as available as others and thus often sought after by collectors. Although the old 1000 notes became invalid as late as 2016, they may be worth more than other notes that were invalided then.
– Higher denominations, such as old 1000 notes, were exchanged fairly quickly to the Riksbank during the exchange period, and that means that access to them has become less now.
It’s not just invalid notes that have value on the secondary market either, Larsson tells Nyheter24.
– Even the new notes that are valid today can be sold for more if they are in good condition than what they are worth if you were to go to the store and shop for them.

Do you have old cash at home? You should do that
It is not entirely easy to know whether an old banknote is in good enough condition to be resold for a higher value and it is difficult to know what the demand will look like in a few years.
– If the notes you have at home are of good quality, it may be a good idea to save them to sell later, but it is difficult to say how much they could go up in price. There are always collectors who will be interested, even if they are fewer in number today than they were 50 years ago.
