Are you one of those people who suddenly feel sick before or during your period? Do you suddenly get a sore throat, fever, joint pain and other typical cold symptoms? No, it’s not actually placebo and no you’re not alone!

News24 have talked to Christina Segerholtspecialist in general medicine at Kry who explains the phenomenon and what causes you to feel sick in connection with your period.

“The body reacts to hormones”

– By cold, we usually mean an infection caused by a virus or bacteria. When you suffer from a cold, some of the symptoms can be very similar to what you would call a “menstrual cold”, she says and continues:

– But what happens is that the body reacts to hormones, which in themselves make you feel that you are getting sick.

She said that you can feel tired, nauseous, have body aches and even have a feverish feeling. Furthermore, Christina Segerholt explains that it is relatively common to feel these infection/cold/flu symptoms in the days between ovulation and menstruation.

So yes, you can actually get the same symptoms as during a cold before and during your period and that is completely normal.
