Corn syrup in foods plays a major role in the formation of diseases such as diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, fatty liver, and obesity. All sugars, including sugar beet or sugar cane, are harmful to our health, especially in excess, but corn syrup is the most harmful of all. There are many foods that we do not know contain corn syrup.
WHY IS CORN SYRUP UNHEALTHY?
Corn syrup contains glucose and fructose. Fructose is 55 percent glucose 45 percent, and they are not bound together, they are free. For this reason, they do not need to be broken down and are quickly absorbed into the blood. The need for more energy for the absorption of free fructose molecules leads to rapid depletion of energy sources (ATP) in the intestines, which leads to the opening of tight bonds between intestinal cells and increased intestinal permeability.
CAUSES THE START OF CHRONIC INFLAMMATION
Food particles and harmful bacteria that have not yet been digested to increase intestinal permeability easily enter the body and initiate the chronic inflammation that underlies all chronic diseases. Once absorbed, fructose is transported directly to the liver, where it is converted to fat, namely triglycerides and cholesterol. Rapidly absorbed glucose leads to the secretion of insulin and leptin hormones, which creates a feeling of satiety. However, fructose does not provide insulin and leptin secretion, and therefore there is no feeling of satiety, people want to eat as they eat.
FOODS CONTAINING CORN SYRUP
SODA, COLA – SODA
Soda is famous for its high sugar content. One glass (200 ml) of soda can contain up to 18 grams of sugar. This is equivalent to 2 tablespoons on average. There is about 30-45 grams of sugar in a glass of other carbonated drinks such as cola and soda.
SWEETS
Candy and candy bars are mostly made of sugar. Many brands add SBS (Starch-based corn syrup sugar) and are often listed as the first ingredient.
