Do I need to have played Diablo 1-3 to understand Diablo 4?

Diablo 4 will be released on June 6, 2023. Enough time to play through all the predecessors again. But do you have to do that in order to find your way around Diablo 4? MeinMMO explains what you need to know.

Do I need to know the predecessors? The short answer is: no. Basically anyone can get into Diablo 4, just like pretty much any other hack’n’slay. The essence of these games is classic looting and leveling.

If you’re just looking for pure gaming fun and like leveling up your character and slicing through opponents, you can never go wrong with Diablo. In addition, the gameplay is so intuitive that you can also show presentable achievements without years of practice. You can find a first impression in the first play tests for Diablo 4.

Am I at a disadvantage if I don’t know parts 1-3? The only thing you will probably miss are special details and nostalgic moments in the story of Diablo 4. The demon Lilith or the angel Inarius will probably not tell you anything.

If you value the story, you can always read it afterwards. You’ll also find the Diablo Story Summary with us, where you’ll learn everything you need to know.

Usually, Diablo games explain enough background as the game progresses so that you at least understand what’s going on. In addition, there are usually entries in the game itself that explain further details to you. Nevertheless, you have certain advantages if you have played all the predecessors.

Diablo 4 is supposed to get the best features from its predecessors, but you don’t have to have played them for that. This is the current status:

Previous knowledge of Diablo helps if you want to be faster

What use is it to me to know parts 1-3? You have a great advantage as a Diablo veteran if you want to level up particularly quickly. It should take 180 hours to reach max level 100. If you’re already familiar with the games, you’ll have a better sense of what improves your character.

In addition, you probably already know the 5 starting classes of Diablo 4 and at least have a basic knowledge of what they can do. This allows you to assess what you want to play and which builds will suit you. Newcomers have to get used to it and maybe try out several classes or builds. Incidentally, reskilling is possible at any time for gold.

Finally, experience in hack’n’slash games will generally help you to understand the controls of Diablo 4 faster and thus prevent deaths. Here you will find a selection of the best titles from the genre:

What is Part 4? After Diablo 3 was simply too “colourful” and comic-like for many fans of the series, Diablo 4 is becoming much darker again, both visually and in terms of the story. The core features include:

At its core, of course, it’s still about slapping demons, getting stronger, and collecting better loot. Diablo 4 offers dungeons, the open world and new “fortress sieges” with which you can unlock new areas.

We haven’t had a chance to test Diablo 4 extensively yet. A beta is to take place before the release on June 6th, which has also not yet been announced. We suspect that the first beta tests with more players will start around March. You can find more information about the game here:
