After Brynäs left the SHL in 2023, the 27-year-old left Swedish hockey to play in Ajoie, Switzerland. Now a year later, he is leaving the alpine country and has finished with a new club in HC Sochi.

The transition to Russia, which is still at war with Ukraine, has aroused strong opinions within hockey Sweden and criticism has been directed at Timashov. Now he breaks the silence and gives answers about why he is carrying out the transition.
– The family, Timashov tells HockeySverige as the main reason for playing in the KHL.
– I have always said that I will play in the KHL sooner or later because of my family, whom I have almost never met in my entire life. I have four siblings and my father in Russia and whom I love.
Responds to criticism
Timashov is the son of a Russian father and a Ukrainian mother. But as far as Russia’s war against Ukraine is concerned, he does not want to connect it to his own hockey career with the words “I never mix politics and sports”.
– I am half Russian and half Ukrainian. I can’t cry because I have Russian roots and want to see my family. Dad and all my siblings are also moving to Sochi to be close to me after all these years. Mother will of course also come there to visit me, he says to the hockey site.

After playing in both the NHL and AHL during his career, Dmytro Timashov is now looking forward to getting closer to his family and playing in front of their support.
– It will be fun to finally have my father and all the siblings in the stands to watch and support me when I play hockey. It will be very special to me after all these years. Just getting to spend time with my family there and take care of them. I also got a good impression of the organization and good feedback from previous Swedes who played there, he says in the interview.

The contract is written for one season, but the Swede already feels that it will be longer than that in Russia.
– It will be more than a year, he says firmly.
