Nadal outscored Australian Jordan Thompson in three straight sets (6-2, 6-2, 6-2) on Monday afternoon.
For Djokovic, it was a later start to the season’s second grand slam. The world set’s evening match against the Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka was the only one of the later matches that was not postponed due to rain, he could thank the closable roof on the main pitch for that.
Like Nadal, Djokovic had no problem with his first opposition. Nishioka was defeated 6–3, 6–1, 6–0.
The two giants can face each other already in the tournament’s quarterfinals.
