Disturbing sci fi film and visually stunning adventure drama won top

For the 80th time, the international film world gathered on the Lido in Venice over the past two weeks to present new works. Large-scale Netflix productions competed for the main prize alongside ambitious works of world cinema. The prizes were awarded today.

Science fiction film with Emma Stone wins Venice Golden Lion

One of the funniest and most disturbing films of the year emerged victorious: The retro sci-fi film Poor Things by Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite) won the Golden Lion for Best Film. In the Frankenstein Variation, Emma Stone plays someone who has risen from the dead and who gets to know the world anew with the brain of a child.

Peter Sarsgaard was awarded the Volpi Cup for best actor, he plays the lead role alongside Jessica Chastain in Michel Franco’s drama Memory. Cailee Spaeny won best actress for her portrayal of Priscilla Presley. In Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, she plays the teenager who meets the older rock star Elvis on a military base in Germany.

Visually stunning adventure drama won two awards

The Grand Jury Prize went to Evil Does Not Exist, the new film by Oscar winner Ryûsuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car), which tells the story of the conflict between a remote community and a glamping startup. The Italian Matteo Garrone received the Directing Prize from the oldest festival in the world and his leading actor from Io Capitano, Seydou Sarr, also received the Newcomer Award. In the visually stunning migrant drama, he plays a Senegalese teenager who sets off for Europe.

La La Land and Babylon director Damien Chazelle chaired the jury this year, which determines the award of the Golden Lion. In addition to Chazelle, this consisted of Jane Campion, Saleh Bakri, Mia Hansen-Løve, Gabriele Mainetti, Martin McDonagh. Santiago Miter, Laura Poitras and Shu Qi.
