Up until now, the operation has only been on a trial basis, but now the commitment to speed up the prosecution of crimes is being made permanent.

The Riksdag has agreed to make the process more efficient in the form of district courts deciding criminal cases receiving a special requirement if the crime has been dealt with quickly during the investigation.

When the operation was tested in Kalmar-Kronoberg last year, the time between police intervention and judgment was shortened by 16 weeks.

Service, when a document or information is provided to a person in a legal case, must also be faster in the case of suspicions against persons who are under 18 years of age and be done in a simplified manner more often.

So-called divided processing of prosecutions, when someone is suspected of several crimes, must also be used to a greater extent.

The handling of penalty orders, for example in the case of traffic offenses where the penalty is a fine or a suspended sentence, must become more efficient.

The changes to the law will come into force on 1 January 2023.
