According to Emma Hernell, CEO of HUI Research, which is owned by the industry organization Swedish Trade, and which is behind “the Christmas gift of the year”, this year’s home-knitted gift is about “showing concern for your loved ones”.
And many in social media agree. “A great present” writes several users on SVT Nyheters Instagram – but not everyone.
Several have in social media have views on the time aspect.
“The home-knitted garment was a hell of a gift to come up with at the end of November. Nothing will be finished,” writes one on Twitter.
And several others chime in.
“Something Dad threatened with”
In HUI’s justification, it is stated that knitting has also received a boost in the younger generation, among other things on the platform Tik Tok. But not everyone is convinced that the children of 2022 wouldn’t be overjoyed to receive home-knitted socks instead of video games.
“Childhood nightmares have come true, the home-knitted garment will be this year’s Christmas present. It was something dad threatened would come in the packages when you didn’t behave,” writes a user on Twitter.
“Disaster”
But are soft packages containing home-knitted clothes a child’s worst nightmare? SVT has asked schoolchildren if it is a home-knitted garment that is on their wish list this year.
– Absolutely not, it’s a disaster. It has to change, says 15-year-old Sami Bozkurt.
Several say that it is not very high on the wish list, but still think that it can be a good gift.
– It’s quite sustainable, because you don’t buy anything new, says Nike Engvall, 15, and Maya Bjellefors, 15, agrees.
– It is good for the environment.
