Current Vice President William Ruto has won Kenya’s presidential election, the chairman of the electoral commission IEBC says. However, several of the Commission’s representatives have rejected the result.
According to IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati, Ruto received almost 7.2 million votes, which equates to 50.5 percent. His rival, longtime opposition leader Raila Odinga, got 48.9 percent.
Shortly before the results were presented, however, the vice chairman of the electoral commission and three other representatives of the commission stated that they could not support the results.
The commission’s split came after Odinga said the results could not be verified, and allegations of electoral irregularities were made, without details or evidence being presented.
At the same time, William Ruto promises to work with “all leaders”, in an attempt to ease the tensions caused by the Electoral Commission’s split.
– There is no room for revenge, says Ruto.
Now Kenyans are waiting to see if Odinga will take the case to court to challenge the results of the election, which was held just under a week ago.
