Since Disney+ went online in Germany in 2020, the sci-fi hit Avatar – Aufbruch nach Pandora has been available on the streaming platform – at the time one of the few blockbusters apart from Star Wars and Marvel. There is a Disney strategy behind the sacking of Avatar
As you may have noticed if you don’t live on Pandora, the sequel Avatar 2: The Way of Water, which has been distributed by Disney since the Fox acquisition, is coming out this year. On the occasion of the long-awaited theatrical release, there is also a storm Avatar 1 the cinemas again, on September 23, 2022. And just under a month before the theatrical release, Disney quietly and secretly pulls the film from the streaming flat rate.
Does the entertainment group want to create an indirect and, cough, discreet incentive to persuade even more people to buy an expensive 3D ticket? One could easily get the idea that Disney cares more about revenue than about fans. Nothing against a new theatrical release. But would there really have been so much against leaving the film to the fans on the traditional platform for a rewatch before part 2?
Where else can I stream Avatar now?
Disney+ was the only way to stream Avatar on a flat rate. Only digital rental and purchase offers remain, for example at Amazon *. Or the good old Blu-ray, which anyway offers the sharper picture compared to Disney+.
