It was in January 2023 that the tenant was forced to move from the rental apartment in Rosengård, after the neighbors for several years complained about a stench in the house, something that Home & Rent was first to report on.
News24 previously written about the case. Then it emerged, among other things, that the unpleasant smell was present both in the stairwell and in the neighbours’ apartments.
The 65-year-old man who caused the stench then said that it was not his fault that it smelled, but he believed that it was the house’s laundry room that was the root of the problem. Although the man denied it, it was clear that he had destroyed the apartment and he was not allowed to stay there.
After a year and a half, the final bill for the man’s neglect of the apartment is now coming – and it won’t be cheap.

Cooked in the bathroom
When the landlord finally got access to the smelly apartment, it turned out that the two-bedroom was completely uninhabitable after several years of decay.
The man told in a letter to the rental board that he also did not have a working refrigerator or running water in the kitchen. The man therefore cooked in the bathroom.

After the stench – the man is forced to pay
After the man’s move, the landlord had to renovate the entire apartment, something that the 65-year-old man has to pay for today.
The bill for the neglect ends up at SEK 87,985, after a default judgment in Malmö district court.
However, the price does not end there, the man must also pay the host’s costs for having pursued the legal case, which is 9,000 kroner.
