In addition to classics like Videodrome and The Fly, master director David Cronenberg also started small. His first feature film Shivers, which was given the more catchy title Parasite Murderer in Germany, already has many of the Canadian’s trademarks.
In Germany, sci-fi horror was indexed for 25 years. After mostly out-of-print releases in limited media books, you can now secure the film at any time as a standard edition in the best 4K quality.

Early Cronenberg horror unleashes sex zombie pandemic between disgust and fascination
At the center of the plot is an apartment complex in which a disgusting parasite is wreaking havoc. The victims of the slimy worm creature transform into zombie-like figures who attack each other with lust or are obsessed with sex.
As in most of his films, Cronenberg combines disgusting body horror with surprising depth for parasite killers. In addition to the fantastic handmade effects and a haunting production, the director even sympathizes with the parasite epidemic. For him, the crude sci-fi horror chaos is an opportunity for new structures and a rebellion against long-established habits. A slimy sex zombie rebellion!
The first Cronenberg feature film was indexed for a long time
According to editing reports, this was Cronenberg’s feature film debut indexed uncut from 1982 to 2007 and was therefore not allowed to be sold or advertised. After the indexing was lifted, the film was released in a new FSK test for ages 16 and up. Media books appeared for the first time in 2019 and are now hardly available.
Even if Cronenberg’s feature film debut is not as sophisticated and masterful as many of his later classics, Parasite Killer aka Shivers is still worth taking a look at today. All of the director’s trademarks can be found here.
