Discarded cigarette blamed for Waterford fire

A fire in Waterford that caused $250,000 in damage was apparently caused by a discarded cigarette on the back deck of the home.

Fire prevention officer Cory Armstrong-Smith with the Norfolk County Fire department said firefighters were called to the Sovereign Street home just after 6 am on Wednesday, finding the fire already reaching the eaves of the home and into the attic.

Crews from Waterford, Simcoe, Teeterville and Delhi arrived and were able to contain the fire to the attic space.

No injuries were reported.

Armstrong-Smith said the home was insured.

“Please remember to discard smoking materials safely,” Armstrong-Smith said in a news release.

“Fully extinguish butts with water and discard in a noncombustible container.”
