After The Expendables 3, the action series with Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham & Co. couldn’t actually sink any lower. The sequel from 2014 was with tamer, bloodless action and interchangeable young stars next to the old action legends, a failure that Sly himself didn’t want to repeat.
The Expendables 4 was released in cinemas last year with a tougher FSK-18 rating, but that’s all that’s positive about the film. You can now watch the current sequel for the first time with a subscription to Sky’s streaming service WOW *. But there is no reason why you should do that.
The Expendables 4 is an ugly action joke
How the action sequel came up with a reported budget of $100 million is one of The Expendables 4’s biggest mysteries. The film looks like cheap VOD junk with at most a fraction of the alleged costs.
The poor CGI effects and embarrassing green screen backdrops are usually unimaginable in a Hollywood blockbuster from 2023 and it is unbelievable that the actioner was allowed into theaters in such an unfinished manner.
Action stars in The Expendables 4? Good joke
It’s quite possible that a lot of the money from The Expendables 4 budget was spent on the stars’ salaries, but there aren’t many of them left. Dolph Lundgren and Randy Couture play down their small parts in such an unmotivated and bored manner that one wonders whether they were even on set with the rest of the cast.

A disappointment The Expendables 4 Review
Stallone is introduced as the leader of the Expendables team removed directly from the film after about 10 minutes, which the story doesn’t even follow through consistently. If you still want to watch The Expendables 4, which as already mentioned you definitely shouldn’t do, we don’t want to “ruin” this outrageous “surprise” for you beforehand.
Instead, the film introduces new team members like Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson and Jacob Scipio, who don’t leave a single lasting impression. Megan Fox is the most prominent newcomer and was teased in advance as the new leader of the troupe. In the film, however, she is mostly reduced to a prickly plaything for Jason Statham’s Lee Christmas.
According to Box Office Mojo, the fourth installment in the action series grossed a ridiculous $37 million worldwide. It has long been officially considered one of the biggest disasters in Sylvester Stallone’s career. There’s still something good about The Expendables 4.
