Disaster weather in China – Record heat and floods

In China, it is currently “dangerously hot”, writes the UK’s national weather service, the Met Office Twitter. According to preliminary figures from the weather agency, China broke its national heat record on Sunday, with a measured temperature of 52.2 degrees.

100 degrees warmer than cold record

The record temperature, which was measured in the Xinjiang region of northwest China, is 1.7 degrees warmer than China’s previous record. Just six months earlier, in January, the record was broken for the coldest temperature ever recorded in China. Then the thermometer stood at minus 52.3 degrees.

Major floods in China

In several other parts of the country, the population is severely affected by major floods at the moment. In the city of Chongqing, people have had to be rescued from the masses of water and in several other places flooded rivers have caused extensive damage to houses and infrastructure.
