After The Witch and The Lighthouse, Robert Eggers has delivered his biggest film to date with The Northman. The Northman is a visually stunning, brutal mix of Viking action and revenge delirium, starring the likes of Alexander Skarsgård and Anya Taylor-Joy almost a $100 million budget has.

In cinemas, the Vikings replacement fell short of expectations financially, with the film making it into the joint top 25 best films of 2022 by Moviepilot and FILMSTARTS. Apparently the director though himself the biggest critic of his own film. The audio commentary with Eggers at least reveals many of his anguished reactions to The Northman.

In a tweet, a user has several Screenshots of subtitles of The Northman audio commentary collected. They reflect Eggers’ opinion on various scenes from the action epic, which is not exactly positive:

The director repeatedly comments on individual shots: “I hate it”while he other than “poorly composed” designated. Robert Eggers has long been known as a meticulous perfectionist who is driven to work on the sets and scenery of his films until every detail is right for him. Therefore, it is not surprising that he is the final works with a lot of self-criticism encountered and has problems watching his own films after completion.

The commercially disappointing The Northman does not, however, throw the director off course artistically. Next up, Eggers is finally shooting his long-planned Nosferatu film, which so far has Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgård and Willem Dafoe on board.
