TOUR DE FRANCE 2022. After a long day of control by the peloton, the 4th stage of this Tour de France was won by Wout van Aert after a huge coup de force from the Belgian.
21:05 – 5th stage of the Tour de France tomorrow from Lille
END OF LIVE – See you tomorrow for the 5th stage of the Tour de France 2022 between Lille and Arenberg, with cobblestones and a little taste of northern hell. For Christian Prudhomme the race director, the stage will be reminiscent of that of the 2018 Tour, a last stage “strewn with cobblestone sectors” which “had seen John Degenkolb’s victory in Roubaix”. “The mileage of tremors will be equivalent on the acrobatic challenge of this first week. Concentration and preparation for this meeting will be for the favorites of the Tour the best weapons to channel their apprehensions”, judges the boss of the Great loop.
20:32 – The profile of the 5th stage tomorrow
The 5th stage of the Tour de France will be like a miniature Paris-Roubaix: a very small stage of only 150 kilometers between Lille and Arenberg, but with about twenty kilometers on cobblestones, especially in the final. In total, 11 cobblestone sectors will be offered, including 5 new ones. The peloton will cross (as best they can) the towns of Hellemmes, Mons and Marcq-en-Barœul, Wasquehal, Villeneuve-d’Ascq before branching off to Bouvines and tackling the cobblestones at Villers-au-Tertre. Then everything should follow: Eswars, Marcq-en-Ostrevent, Émerchicourt, Monchécourt… A “dantesque” finish is announced with a passage between Bousignies and Millonfosse, then between Hasnon and Wallers with a few very risky kilometers on the spot.
20:08 – Guillaume Martin fears the cobblestones on the Tour tomorrow
The leader of Cofidis Guillaume Martin has already said a few words about the 5th stage of the Tour de France, tomorrow, between Lille and Arenberg. While the Tower will pass on the cobblestones of the North, he anticipates gaps at the finish for Cyclismactu.net. According to him, it is the “last sectors”, “fairly long” which will be “the hardest”. Objective for the climber: not to leave too many feathers there to approach the mountain serenely. “This year, as I’m not playing the general classification, I think I’m going to live this stage better. I will be far from this tension and the fear of losing everything after months of preparation”, he nuances.
7:39 p.m. – Pro-migrant demonstrators on the Tour de France
Among the highlights of this 4th stage of the Tour de France on Tuesday, activists burst in not far from the finish line at the end of the day to support migrant refugees in the city of Calais. What disrupt the triumph of Wout Van Aert, even if activists were repelled by the police. In Le Figaro, the spokesperson for these demonstrators says she wanted this “action” to “alert about the situation of exiles in the city”, but without the desire to “disturb the Tour de France”. “The Tour de France is coming to Calais, it is the symbol of a bicycle that can circulate freely everywhere and in a city where the migratory situation is extremely complicated, where people live in camps”, she added. .
19:19 – Van Aert’s victory, a “long premeditated blow” assures Laporte
Christophe Laporte, also teammate of Wout Van Aert at Jumbo-Visma, finished third in the stage. At the finish, he spoke of a “shot that had been premeditated for a long time. With the team, we had checked off this stage with the firm intention of toughening up the race at this precise place. It’s a great day. During the sprints massive, our automatisms with Wout are not quite there yet. Having him arrive alone was the best way for him to impose himself. He was really very strong and behind, it took a long time to get organized.
19:15 – What is the general classification after the 4th stage?

6:51 p.m. – “Van Aert, half man, half motor” laughs Roglic
Primoz Roglic, Wout Van Aert’s teammate at Jumbo-Visma, greeted his teammate’s victory, not without a touch of irony: “yes, Wout Van Aert is crazy, completely crazy! He is half man, half motor! We couldn’t have hoped for better, it’s just amazing, I’m really proud to be part of this team, we were there, in ambush, the situation was favorable, the guys were super strong and we had to try. When he left , no one could go with him.”
6:20 p.m. – Wout Van Aert, winner of the day: “we had to try something”
At the finish of the race, Wout Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma), the winner of the day, recounted his victory, after setting off alone up the coast of Cap Blanc-Nez: “I didn’t want to take the risk once again in the sprint. It was quite obvious that we had to try something with the team. I was ideally placed at the foot, and we put everything we had in the hill, it was super hard We heard on the radio that there was damage so I went all the way to the top. […] I decided to go alone for ten kilometers of suffering.”
6:05 p.m. – Jasper Philipsen: “I didn’t see Van Aert leave”
While he thought he had won the day’s stage by winning the final sprint, it was only after the finish that Jasper Philipsen realized that Wout Van Aert had arrived first. He explained his blunder: “I didn’t see Van Aert leave, and I had a bad connection to the headset. I sprinted for the win, but it was just passing the line that I lost my realized my mistake.”
