A cocaine seizure in Helsingborg’s port in December confirms that there is a direct link for cocaine smuggling from South America to Helsingborg, customs believes.
Two men who were arrested in the vicinity of Helsingborg’s harbor are charged with particularly serious drug offences. They are suspected of having retrieved 47 kilos of cocaine from a container in the harbor on the night of December 14.
During the night, the detectives of the customs crime department discovered that masked people carrying bags were moving among the containers in the port. Later, the two men were arrested a short distance away. By following shoe prints in the snow, police and customs personnel found three hidden bags about 100 meters away, filled with roughly 47 kilograms of cocaine. According to customs, the cocaine is worth at least SEK 43 million.
“The seizure confirms what we have long suspected, that there is a direct link to Helsingborg from South America where the cocaine is produced. It is also a remarkable method that they enter the port area and whitewash containers in this way,” says Erik Friberg, head of the Swedish Customs Administration’s criminal division south, in a press release.
None of the accused men admit involvement in cocaine smuggling. One admits he was at the port to pick up drugs, but says he thought it was hashish. The other denies any involvement.
