Didn’t want to take the cat to the summer cottage: “Then it would have to be euthanized”

At the Uppsala cat home, all rooms are full. During the holidays, the number of cats in need of a new home increases, says Sibylle Zetterberg, founder and volunteer at the Uppsala cat shelter.

– We get more calls than during the rest of the year, at this time, she explains.

She tells about a case where a person was going to travel to his summer cottage. Instead of taking the cat with them, it was to be euthanized.

– It starts at Easter, Pentecost, Midsummer, holidays. Narrated by Sibylle Zetterberg.

Sibylle Zetterberg tells us that it is a trend that they are seeing more and more, that cat owners prioritize the holidays instead of the cat.

“We can’t help everyone”

That cats are left away in connection with holidays is something that even the friends of the cat shelter Mickey have seen.

Cindy’s Kitty Rescue in Uppsala works with foster homes and only has a few places during the year. They haven’t seen an increase in homeless cats during the holiday season, but think it’s based on the fact that many people know that places at Cindy’s Kitty Rescue are few during the summers.

– We can’t help everyone, no matter how much we want to, says Sibylle Zetterberg. And explains that both premises and finances prevent them from helping all the cats.
