Diablo 4 wanted to fix one of the biggest points of criticism, thereby creating “the only problem” with Season 2

Diablo 4 thrilled players with Season 2 and did a lot better than the previous season. Only two changes are repeatedly criticized: that materials are now needed for different things. At BlizzCon 2023, Associate Game Director Joe Piepiora explains that this change was actually intended to fix a much older problem.

What kind of criticism is that?

  • Diablo 4 was never intended to be an MMO, but it was always intended to score points with MMO elements. The idea was to create a shared Diablo world where players interact with each other.
  • Before it was released, the idea met with opposition, especially from fans of the old parts. They wanted their own Diablo, a solo experience and to play alone without xXGamerXx running through their screen.
  • Shortly later, the opinion turned 180°: with the severely restricted trading and the lack of a group finder, players suddenly criticized how much social interaction was missing.

    • This should fix the problem: With the new Season 2, Blizzard has introduced several innovations. Among them is a change or a new feature that now requires significantly more grind than before.

    The new rolling of item affixes, for which you used to have to pay several hundred million gold, is now cheaper, but costs the rare Forgotten Souls and Devil Roses.

    There is also now the option to summon Uber Duriel and thus specifically farm the Uber Uniques. For this you also need a material: living steel. At BlizzCon 2023, MeinMMO editor Benedict Grothaus interviewed associate game director Joe Piepiora. He said that the developers’ idea here was for players to meet and trade. But that didn’t work.

    “The only L, but a big one”

    Both circumstances angered fans. They complain: rerolling is now cheaper, but requires a lot more work. Because you can only get devil roses and souls in hellish floods, just like the living steel.

    The floods are not always active, but only every few hours and only for an hour. So you are forced to play intensively at certain times if you want to farm the relevant materials and not buy them.

    In addition, you need an enormous number of floods to even find what you want. If you’re looking for a specific Unique, you may have to complete up to 1,800 Hell Floods because you can only get a limited amount of steel.
