Diablo 4 is almost finished, but Blizzard deliberately foregoes an important feature from the past

Even after the Diablo 4 beta, Blizzard is working feverishly on changes and adjustments just before the Hack&Slay is released. While a lot of feedback has now been received, there will be one most important core feature for a better overview of the release.

Which feature is it? This is the helpful feature of the map overlay. This feature allowed you to overlay whatever map you were in larger but visually transparent over your screen. This allowed players to look at the map while controlling their hero.

Blizzard was therefore asked whether this feature will also be available in Diablo 4, but the developers do not have good news for the time being.

No map overlay at launch of Diablo 4

How did Blizzard comment on this? Twitter user Anundir has asked Diablo boss Rod Fergusson if a TAB overlay will be implemented in Diablo 4 because he missed looking at his map while traveling through the new Sanctuary.

Rod Fergusson responded with a short but direct reply: “No plans at the moment.” (via twitter.com)

Despite the Diablo boss’s answer, it’s not entirely clear whether Diablo 4 will generally exist without a map overlay. The feature has been an important and useful part of Hack&Slay for two titles. It is currently unclear whether the developers will implement a similar feature at a later date, but cannot be completely ruled out.

The team behind Diablo 4 works through feedback quickly and this can also be proven with the upcoming changes to the UI for the release. So if the community urgently needs a map overlay, Blizzard will most likely find a solution.

What are the fans saying? Opinions are divided. Some players don’t think it’s bad that Blizzard is breaking new ground. Other fans, on the other hand, are annoyed by the decision and instead demand an additional option in the settings:

  • “That should definitely be an option. A mini-map in the corner isn’t enough, and having to keep opening the map while moving is tedious.” – says DecayingBlond
  • “[…] You have to at least create an optional overlay so people can decide whether to use it or not.” – thinks BaconX43507728
  • “It would be cool to at least have a choice. I don’t keep it open all the time in D2, but it was extremely helpful for gameplay and I missed it a lot in D3.” – says xWILLOFD
  • It remains to be seen whether Blizzard will decide to add the feature after the release.
