Diablo 4 gives you boss mats and gems, but you can easily overlook it

Boss materials and gems are two important resources in Diablo 4, especially for endgame activities. The ARPG even gives them to you for free, but it can happen that you overlook this while grinding.

Since Season 4, you can get the mats to summon the bosses from more sources, and since Season 2, the gems themselves no longer drop as items, but in the form of fragments. You can get them from events, the Tree of Whispers, and as drops from enemies with a “purple aura.”

Why are the mats important? The gems give you certain bonuses, such as your maximum life, your armor or critical hit damage. Many builds require rubies in particular, which offer a bonus to maximum life when you use them in armor.

It is not unusual that you need five rubies for your build in the endgame – that’s a whopping 50,000 fragments for the royal version of the gems. In our overview you will find the strongest endgame builds for Season 4 in Diablo 4.

The boss mats are also useful in the endgame if you want to expand your builds. Many builds only become really strong with certain uniques or even uber uniques – and these primarily drop from certain bosses.

How many fragments do I need? To craft the gems, you need a lot of fragments, especially at the higher levels:

  • Damaged Gemstone: 10 fragments, 1,000 gold
  • Gemstone: 100 fragments, 10,000 gold
  • Flawless Gem: 1,000 fragments, 100,000 gold
  • Royal Gem: 10,000 fragments, 1,000,000 gold

How do I get the mats for free? Basically, you get boss mats and gem fragments for free if you play the season and use the following features:

  • Farming the “Wolf Honor” of the Iron Wolves
  • Completing the stages of the seasonal journey
  • Why is this so easy to overlook? Wolf Honor is not a “mandatory” thing. You will lose out on some useful items if you don’t collect your rewards, but there is no special season mechanic that you absolutely need this time. You also quickly forget about the season journey if you are grinding and leveling up faster than you can distribute points and collect rewards.

How do I farm wolf honor? In Season 4, the Iron Wolves are the central theme and an integral part of all Helltides – they are already available at World Level 1. If you play the Helltide, you advance your reputation with the Iron Wolves. In concrete terms, this means that everything you do in the Helltide, such as opening chests, slicing monsters and completing events, advances your progress.

Within the reputation system, you can earn rewards from the mercenaries. The rewards for the 18 levels include legendaries, uniques, crafting recipes, but also boss materials and gem fragments.

If you increase your wolf honor, you will also advance your seasonal journey. This is because there are tasks within the journey that are related to your rank among the Iron Wolves.

How do I complete the seasonal trip? Season 4 also includes the seasonal journey feature with its seven stages. With each completion of a stage, you receive reward boxes. These contain legendaries, uniques, crafting materials, but also gem fragments and boss mats.

Within the stages you will be faced with tasks such as:

  • Increase your wolf honor
  • Complete Ironwolf events during the Infernal Flood
  • Complete Cellars/Dungeons/World Events
  • Collect Herb Bundles/Angel’s Breath/Iron Chunks
  • Defeat Grigoire/The Echo of Varshan
  • Upgrades Paragonglyphs
  • To complete the stages, you have to complete a certain number of tasks per level. If you complete the season journey in full and complete each stage 100%, you will even get a “secret player title” on top of that. However, to do this, you have to face the toughest bosses in Diablo 4.
