“Diablo 2 did it better”

Leveling up hard and getting good loot are the core functions of Diablo. On Reddit, a user compares the grind for loot in Diablo 4 to a full-time job that a predecessor in the series would have done better.

On Reddit on February 10th, user ameekpalsingh wrote a post about his experiences with loot in Diablo 2 and Diablo 4. In it, he expressed his displeasure that the older Diablo and its Resurrected version were so much more fun than the most recent offshoot.

Basically, ameekpalsingh compares Diablo’s loot output to casino slot machines: To get the loot, you have to pull the arm of the machine. Then it gives out a random amount of rewards.

ameekpalsingh’s annoyance: Diablo 4 would make its players take unnecessary extra steps before they could get loot. In Diablo 2 this would be much quicker and easier – you would get the dopamine hit you want more quickly.

“Diablo 4 is a full-time job – but not a fun one”

Why does he compare Diablo 4 to a full-time job? Ameekpalsingh played Diablo 2 Resurrected a lot. He understands the system behind it well: you fight, defeat bosses and are quickly and reliably supplied with exciting loot.

In Diablo 4, however, the same mechanics are reminiscent of a full-time job, “but not the kind of job that is fun” – because of the many additional steps. The Reddit user suspects the reason for this is that Blizzard’s main target group is content creators who see Diablo 4 as work.

If you want more than just better items, you actually have to invest a lot of time, because loot doesn’t automatically drop in the best possible version and has to be checked in detail.

People are too nostalgic

How does the community react? The top comment on the thread addresses the high praise for Diablo 2. In fact, most commentators think that the loot system in this game wasn’t that good after all:

  • MonsutaReipu: I played Diablo 2 as a child and teenager for over 5000 hours and I think people are too nostalgic and romanticize it too much. It had no endgame, it was very poorly balanced, and there were only a handful of viable builds that you could use if you really wanted to get into the endgame. And in the end that was just “farm as efficiently as possible” […].
  • west coastcanes: Yes, sometimes I read these posts and feel like the authors have never actually played Diablo 2. Or at least they have forgotten the reality of 15 years ago. […]
  • lantiir: […] I had thousands of hours in Diablo 2 as a kid and now I have thousands of hours in Diablo 2 Resurrected as an older kid and I think Diablo 2/Diablo 2 Resurrected brings a lot more play time than Diablo 4 does at the moment. […]
  • The user made a text adjustment to his post and added:

I largely agree with everything that was said. However, it’s still more work to clean the floor and do 10 jumping jacks before you can even spin the slot machine. Before you had easy/quick access to the slot machine. […]

I played D2R a lot. I upgraded all my characters. The game is just so much better when it comes to getting that “dopamine” hit from an exciting drop.

Unfortunately, the timing of the text adjustment is not known, but ameekpalsingh probably adjusted his post based on feedback from the community.

Commentator 9dius, on the other hand, points out that Blizzard is not interested in the players’ fun, but rather their time. Many agree with him. User Heatinmyharbl remembers the days of Diablo 3: I saw so many posts like this in the Diablo 3 sub 12 years ago. Time is a flat circle.

How are you doing with the loot system in Diablo 4? Do you think it’s good or are you rather disappointed with it? Feel free to leave your opinion in the comments.

While many players don’t seem to be particularly happy about the game’s status quo, at least one player isn’t bored even after 1,000 hours: “Not bored after 1,000 hours” – player explains why he still enjoys Diablo 4 and others no longer
