Developers of Tibia announce new MMORPG for PC after 28 years, with zombies and Fortnite vibes

The German studio behind the successful title Tibia is working on a new MMORPG called Persist Online, which is due to be released on Steam. A post-apocalyptic world full of zombies and different factions awaits you.

What kind of MMORPG is this? Persist Online throws you into the post-apocalypse, where you have to fight zombies with firearms and melee weapons. The key features of the virtual battle for survival are as follows:

  • Persist Online offers a persistent, open online world through which hundreds of players can move simultaneously and in which every building can be accessed.
  • A dynamic sandbox with day and night cycles, weather changes and tides awaits you.
  • The world is divided into zones that are of varying levels of danger. You will not only encounter hordes of zombies, but also mutated boss enemies.
  • In addition, the bunker serves as a safe haven, where you will find extensive crafting options for weapons and equipment.
  • The combat system with firearms and melee weapons (from the robust frying pan to the powerful shotgun) is intended to be tactical but also action-packed. Watch out for ricochets, “friendly fire” is active!
  • There are no fixed classes. By choosing active and passive skills, you can give your hero a certain individuality. If you are playing in a team, synergies between the skills can open up useful team strategies.
  • PvP is supposed to play an important role in the open world, as you can capture claims and nodes. The guild system supports open world PvP.

What about release and payment model? Persist Online will soon enter the Early Access phase on Steam and will also be released for macOS and Linux. There is no specific date yet. What is clear, however, is that the developers want to implement a free-to-play model. The final monetization is not yet set in stone, however.

Are there any screenshots yet? The developers have already released some screenshots and artwork for Persist Online. When it comes to the third-person perspective and the design of the models and game world, we are strongly reminded of Fortnite, only the colors are not quite as vibrant. What is your first impression?

    MMORPG expertise from Regensburg

Who is behind Persist Online? The studio is called CipSoft and was founded in 2001 in Regensburg, Bavaria, after the MMORPG Tibia, released in 1997, became a success.

The online role-playing game with the charming retro look has had 32 million players and 200 million euros in sales over the years, and is said to be more successful today than ever before. The studio has been able to grow sustainably, currently employing 100 people.

In addition to Tibia, TibiaME, an MMORPG for mobile devices, was released in 2003. Both titles continue to receive updates and new content to this day. Persist Online is therefore CipSoft’s first MMORPG for the PC in almost 28 years.

Remarkable: The MMORPG started as a hobby project of two long-time CipSoft employees. Product manager Benjamin Zuckerer describes it in the press release as follows:

The real appeal of an MMORPG lies in the variety of ways players can interact and the unpredictable stories that result from this. The decades we’ve been running Tibia have shown this time and again.

Persist Online started as a hobby project and is the brainchild of two long-time CipSoft employees. We simply started developing the game that we ourselves would like to play. The core team now consists of 14 people and has access to all departments and all of the company’s know-how.

This is possible because employees are allowed to use 20 percent of their working time for their own game ideas. Another cool thing is that employees are directly involved in the success of the company, which still operates independently today, and are expected to receive ten (!) additional monthly salaries in 2024 alone.

Another example shows how sustainable the success of CipSoft and Tibia is. The studio was named Studio of the Year at the German Computer Game Awards in 2022.
