Developer plays Final Fantasy 14 for 4,000 hours, brings his own game to Steam, and is an immediate hit

A solo developer’s game will in May 2024 one of the most successful roguelikes on Steam. This also overtakes the developer’s first game from 2020.

What game is this about? Rabbit and Steel is a new game from solo developer mino_dev that was released on Steam on May 9, 2024. His game is described as a cooperative action “raiding” roguelike.

The focus is on mastering challenging boss fights together with up to four players. The game aims to reinvent the essence of MMO raids. This means that fights rely on cooldowns, effective use of skills, equipment effects and teamwork to outsmart boss mechanics.

How is the game received? The Steam page also makes it clear that Rabbit and Steel is not an MMO, but a roguelike. But the concept seems to be well received by fans of this genre.

Rabbit and Steel probably became a little insider tip on Steam and even made it into the best roguelikes on Steam in May 2024. And that even though it was released only three days after the long-awaited Hades 2.

Rabbit and Steel has received 97% extremely positive reviews on Steam to date and is the 11th most played action roguelike according to SteamDB.

How does this relate to Final Fantasy 14? “I think the influence of Final Fantasy 14 is so obvious that it doesn’t even need to be mentioned,” says the developer himself, as gamesradar reported. Nevertheless, he then talks about the inspiration that flowed into his latest game after over 4,000 hours of play in the MMORPG Final Fantasy 14.

Above all, after these hours of play, he is very familiar with the game’s raid formula. “I’m very familiar with what’s fun and what’s not in a raid,” he continues. But above all, it is a concept that he is strangely positioned to develop.

The developer also mentions titles like Hades and Slay the Spire as inspiration for his new game. Nevertheless, the game with its cute bunny girls, over 100 random, collectible items and the various classes, such as assassin, druid or dancer, remains primarily a love letter to Final Fantasy 14.
